Data Spaces
Practical Studio Project
2023 → Details
In the current age, data has become a driving force in our daily lives. Our information channels, interactions and digital footprints are seamlessly and ubiquitously captured, collected by algorithms and analysed in data centres to steer the world we live in. The use and treatment of data, often seen as a more scientific and technical matter, is now an increasingly important aspect of a designer's toolkit, processes, and knowledge.
In this class and over the course of this semester we will look at different forms of data and ways to give form to data. We want to apply different methods when collecting, analysing and expressing data. We can do so through digital means like software tools, digital devices or code, but also through analog means such as measuring, counting, sampling, drawing or using craft.
Project led by Andreas Schlegel with Vikas Kailankaje, Gideon Kong and Jo Ho Keywords Data, Creative Coding, Machine Learning, Artefacts
Select projects from the list below.
- Tacto Tunes by Aaron, Pragathi & Qisthina
A creative musical playmat that transforms touch into tunes! Using a touchboard and some clever coding, this interactive project invites users to turn the playmat into a musical instrument.
- Noise over Nature by Alda, Aaron, Tammy, Carenza
Noise Over Nature is an awareness initiative designed to elevate consciousness about the disruptive effects of urbanization on nature and its tranquility. The project aims to push the boundaries of environmental campaigns with the use of contemporary technology and software with the consuming question "What if we can listen to Nature's Cries?".
- Droplets of Home by Hwain, Ummi, and Nasya
This project is dedicated to crafting an experience that reconnects the audience with their cherished memories of "home.” The final artefact takes the shape of a blanket fortress, reminiscent of the ones we joyfully constructed as children. Within the fortress, four distinct visuals harmonise with audio and interactive elements, guiding the viewer into an immersive, reflective, and personal journey.
- Emotional Entities by Phoebe, Tiara, Vionetta
In this project, we relive our emotions in distinct ways, turning self-quantified data into generative visuals. By visualizing our daily feelings and thoughts, we aim to share our stories in a way that goes beyond words. Unlike typical written diaries, our "Emotional Entities" are set to change how people express and reflect on their emotions.
- Casa D'Atas by Angella, Celine, Jun Liang
Casa D’atas is a project that aims to peel back the curtains of Singapore’s condo culture through a humorous approach, using satire as a tool to present the absurdity of perceived luxury and compel the audience to reconsider their relationship with excess.
- Comic Quantification by Anna, Cristal and Irene
Our chosen brief is Self Quantification, where we are tasked to collect data on ourselves in a set duration of our choice. With this data we have created Comic Quantification, Comic Quantification is the representation of our day-to-day experience in both numbers and illustrated strips in our individual styles. The aim of this project is to quantify our days into numbers and thereafter tie them to the experiences we had. Ultimately creating a complete narrative of each day of the month.
- Soundscapes of Memories by Chaewon, Zafhir, Mindy, Zi Wei
Explore how different sounds and auditory cues can trigger specific emotional responses and memories. Therefore, through sound visualisation, we aim to evoke a universal sense of nostalgia, uniting diverse experiences through an interactive sensory journey
- Collective Landscape of Fears by Kit, Neysa and Steph
A generative project where we explore the multitude of fears we have as children and adults. Join us as we recount our fears to an image generator. This framework allows us to recount our fears in detail and have someone else (in this case, the generator) imagine the scenario. This is deliberate to create a cloud of nostalgia, and looking through the foggy lenses of memory.
- Happiness Adventure by Lourenz, Sumin and Keira
A fun little AR experience-based project with the aim of spreading happiness to university students who are currently feeling stressed or overwhelmed with school work. The final outcome of our project is presented using the form of a video campaign, showing how our program can turn a student’s frown upside down.
- AI: Interpreting & Visualizing the Unknown by Ethel, Khushi and Louise.
A graphic novel born from a fusion of AI-powered image and text generators. Our project endeavors to explore the realm of AI's capabilities in eliciting human emotions, recognizing the fundamental aspect of storytelling deeply entrenched within the human experience.
- Cultural Cocoon by Sandhini, Lee Min, Jansley, Gwyneth
The project is an archive showcasing Singapore's rich cultural tapestry using AI image generation. By capturing images in cultural hubs, detecting vibrant colors, and utilizing web-based tools, the project aims to create unique textile patterns for each image. The ultimate goal is to weave these patterns into a tapestry, serving as a visual homage to Singapore's diverse cultural heritage. By leveraging AI, the project seeks to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the city-state's multifaceted traditions and heritage, preserving its cultural mosaic for future generations.
- Bloom in The Dark by Krystle, Valencia, Boon Cheong and Trisha
The project entails on the journey to visualise the pollination process and humanise it through our own interpretation. It will involve the use of tradtitional means to capture the imagery of the flowers and using existing softwares that aid us in the process of the visualisation. The project will take on the concept of visual imagery to generate sounds, it will be documentation of the different experiments trialed for the output.
- Touchy Terrors by Arena, Jessica, Khalisa, Yoonjin
A yucky, icky project that aims to investigate the connections between visual imagery and fear responses associated with texture aversion. We utilise everyday materials to conduct research create our artefacts.
- Timewriter by Elysia, Winnie, Keisha
- Coded Comfort by Jade Min, Kai Siang, Yumi, Saanvi
- Let's be friends by Zi Jie, Zarer and Nishi.
"Let's Be Friends" takes a cryptic and eerie approach towards truth in media culture and reflects our perspective on the dark side of generative aesthetics.
- Impermanence by Max, Yun So, Claricia
“Impermanence” explores the sequential properties of facial expressions through a real-time installation. The deliberate sequencing and duration of these expressions play a significant role in the perception and categorization in the human mind. The installation employs facial detection technology to transform these expressions into real-time data, crafting a mesmerizing multi-sensory experience. The ultimate aim is to empower participants with a profound comprehension of their own expressive nuances, fostering a heightened self-awareness through the intersection of technology and human emotion.
- Musical Odyssey by Patricia, Amelia, Jun
What if there were other ways for everyone to experience and enjoy music? This project is an explorative approach to interpreting the perceptions people have toward music by creating imaginary musical worlds that visually represent the way people respond to diverse types of music genres.
